What is a SSL certificate?

Appeared in 1995, the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol for securing information transmitted between a user’s browser and the server of the website he wants to access.

SSL certificates are issued by certification authorities, the most known are Comodo, Geotrust, Thawte, RapidSSL, Certum and Symantec.

To be defined as such, they must fulfill the « membership programs » requirements, defined by operating systems and search engines. This is a way to ensure their reliability and their ability to develop SSL certificates.

These certificates ensure the confidentiality of the exchanged information by using an encryption system, so that they can be interpreted only by the receiving website.

Visually, this certificate is represented by a green padlock with the mention « secure » followed by the « https » in the URL (it may vary according to the browser) which is a guarantee of security to customers’ minds.

A SSL certificate can be considered as your website ID which will allow you to gain your visitors’ trust by certifying its identity and the security of the exchanged data.

For the website owner:
Obtaining a SSL certificate requires different actions depending on the level of validation with more or less lengthy procedures.

For the visitor:
A secure website allows him to make sure that he is on the website he wants and not a fraudulent version, thanks to details available by clicking on the padlock in the URL bar.
